Balò Buone Notizie – Settembre 2020
Balò's Response to the Pandemic
The pandemic caused an unprecedented food emergency throughout India, and Pilkhana, the slum of Calcutta where Balò operates, was no exception.
"I certainly never imagined having to transform the Balò school into a 'warehouse' for storing and collecting food supplies. I never imagined having to do it within a week of everything shutting down, in deafening silence and with the anxiety of not finding anything to give to those mothers who quietly avoided police checks at night and went to our director to say they had nothing left to feed their children. We acted immediately but couldn't find anything, and the streets were patrolled by police and the army. I couldn't stop thinking about those mothers I know well who turned to us because they had no other options."
